The funniest things in office always happen in the lifts.

This morning I came in late 'cos of heavy traffic on the roads. So I was like 10mins late for breakfast and I was very hungry. We have six lifts in this building but like 10 of us squeezed into this one lift. Sibe kway4 seo1. When the lift started moving, the fragrance of somebody's breakfast flooded the lift. My stomach growled. Not once, not twice, but thrice. Everybody heard it and they were looking around. Luckily some joker said to the fella with the food, 'wow your breakfast sure smells good eh.' and that distracted the other lift-ers from their visionary hunt for the suspect. Phew.

So I came in to office, started up my desktop and laptop (Yes I have to use both don't ask me why 'cos its a top secret). Then my usual breakfast gang were rushing me to go down for breakfast 'cos one of them has a meeting at 10am. So off we went. Bumped into a few other colleagues working at the same level as us and we were chatting as we went into the lift. There were two other dudes already in the lift (same company but different department). Guess they know my few other colleagues 'cos one of them asked if we are poly students. We were all like ???. Then he said oh uni interns ar? We were like ZZzzZzz.

And then we realised. I was wearing polo-T and jeans. This other girl was wearing short denim skirt with a jacket over her T. Then the last girl was wearing T and jeans. Well done la.

Knn don't liddat la. On days that I wear my tailored slim cut long sleeve shirt with cuff links and my tailored pants that puts Sam's ass to shame, nobody asks if I'm the Chief Executive or Director. Gimme a break la.

I opened a letter from CPF yesterday and what a joke it was. My study loan, using my dad's CPF account, is due for repayment. CPF's advice is for me to pay $300+ a month. The loan plus accrued interest amounts to about $19k ++. A quick mental calculation will tell you that by paying $300+ a mth, a person will be able to clear the full loan in 67+ months. Thats like 5.5 years. And for a guy, he will be almost 32 years old by the time he clears the CPF loan. And I'm not sure if there will be additional interest during the 5 years of mthly repayment.

Madness right. I really admire those people who have repaid their study loan. People like me will just buy more 4D and Toto and hope to be able to clear the loan in one lump sum payment. Ha.

Which leads me to confirm that my thinking, back when I was finishing my NS, was right. Whats the point of seeking higher education?

For a graduate with a starting pay of 3k, an annual increment of 5%, he will have earned a total of almost $200k in 5 years.

For a non-graduate with a starting pay of 1.5k, same annual increment of 5%, he will have earned a total of almost $200k in 9 years.

Its the same!

In case you dont understand why one is 5 years and one is 9 years, its cos of the 4 years university education. All the above do not factor in bonuses.

My point is that when both of them turn 32, the one without education would've earned much more. Yes, you can tell me that the graduate's pay will have exponential growth after the 5 years and all.. but if the non-grad job hops, his pay will increase exponentially. All the more so with his 9 years of experience.

So why do we study? I really dunno. Are graduates really better in their work than the non-grads? Look around your office and figure.

Public service officers satisfied with effectiveness of their service

Public service officers satisfied with effectiveness of their service

SINGAPORE: Two-thirds of Singapore's public service officers feel their work has made an impact on themselves and society. This was revealed in a survey of 1,600 officers from 28 agencies which was conducted in the first half of 2007.

The Minister-in-Charge of the Civil Service, Teo Chee Hean, wants the public sector to build on this confidence. He said Singapore's public service can take satisfaction over the fact that its effectiveness has been the bedrock of Singapore's success today.

To further reinforce this message, there will be a Public Service Week in mid-May during which civil servants will take stock of the various programmes so far and look at ways to further enhance the effectiveness of the public service.

The minister added that Singapore's successful bid to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 serves as an important lesson for the civil service.

Mr Teo, who is also the president of the Singapore National Olympic Council, said it is all about passion and the united purpose of Team Singapore. And when the Youth Olympics kicks off, it is important that Singaporeans have a total welcoming atmosphere for the athletes and officials.

Mr Teo said: "I was in Manchester for the Commonwealth Games, and even on a weekday afternoon in the athletics heats, lots of people were cheering the athletes on. That is what I like to see from the people sector in Singapore."

However, he said that the protests surrounding the Olympic torch are unfortunate, as the Olympics is about celebrating sports.

Minister Teo continued: "I do hope we can set politics aside and enjoy the festival of sports, of what the Olympics is supposed to be and respect the torch for what it symbolises."

As for Singapore, he said the IOC assessment committee was impressed with what the country will deliver for the Youth Olympic Games. The challenge now is to fulfil that mission by 2010. - CNA/vm

My colleague came in an hour late today. Apparently, there were no train services between choa chu kang and bukit gombak towards jurong east. It is said that the cause of it is due to a 40yr old chinese man jumping off the platform.

My immediate reaction was 'Wah. Must be last night take Manu.'
(FYI, last night manu drew 2-2 with boro.)

After much thoughts, here's the likely cause(s).

Champions League on Tuesday: Fenerbache 2 Chelsea 1.

UEFA Cup on Thursday: All four favourites did not clear handicap.

Saturday: Hot favourite Arsenal drew 1-1 with Liverpool who fielded their reserve team.

Sunday: Hot favourite Manu fielding almost a full strength squad drew 2-2 with Boro. Hot favourite Barcelona 0-0 with Getafe. Juve lost 2-3 to Palermo.

In chinese we call this 'Know mountain got tiger, still go towards tiger's mountain.'

R.I.P. man.

Insects. Oh how we hate them. Flying ones are worse.

I've never really had a problem with insects. Especially the small little harmless looking ones. But KNN, a life turning event took place last night.

I was happily on the phone when I saw an insect fly past me. It looked so tiny and harmless that I didn't even bother to swat it away. Half a second later, I heard a loud buzzing noise and my instinct told me that my other ear (not covered by the phone) was in danger. I yelped and tried to duck. And then I realised I couldn't find the insect anymore. Did it fly out of the window or what?

I was scared la. And the next thing I did was stupid. I tried to dig my ear using a cotton bud. Mistake. Sam checked online and told me that we shouldn't insert any objects into our ear cos it may push the insect in further. Instead I should pour some warm water or some weirdo oil thingy into the ear to drown the insect and then flush it out. In the end I just slept. Another remedy was to create total darkness and shine a torch into the ear cos insects are attracted to light and may dig its way out. So I switched off the light, point my radio clock towards my pillow, and slept with my penetrated ear facing it.

This morning I still felt discomfort. Too paiseh to call my workplace to tell them hey i'm going to the doc cos got insect in my ear. They'll all think I chao geng cos I watch the manu match last night. Zzz. So I came to work and went to the clinic during breakfast. Doc manhandled my ear with his hand and microscope/telescope and told me that there's nothing inside except for some inflamation. He said that perhaps the insect bit me before flying off. CCB.

And so here I am, sitting at my desk, dripping ear drops into my ear once every 4 hours. SIAN.
